Why grow weed from seed?
In nature, marijuana seeds, like human beings, contain the combined genetic information of both parents, expressing different parental traits and often new, surprising traits that both parents lack. This constant recombination of genes is the cornerstone of evolution. The cannabis seeds purchased from a reputable seed bank are specially selected offspring, stabilized for uniformity but still subject to the laws of nature. Your Homegrown seeds will produce very similar plants, but can still throw up some interesting and exciting phenos.

Our customers and community members often talk about the joy of being able to nurture their cannabis plant all the way from the seed to the final harvest. People love growing marijuana! Homegrown Cannabis Co. - Best place to buy marijuana seeds
While weed seeds for sale are now much easier to find than ever before, you should remain vigilant, careful and open-eyed. All is often not what it seems. Many claim to be the best seed banks but few actually offer stable genetics. There are some sites that claim to be american seed banks, but are actually European.
These cannabis seed banks ship from Europe, and you can find that your seeds will take many, many weeks to arrive, if they arrive at all! Besides the reduced chance of a successful delivery, international shipments are exceptionally bad for seeds, for a number of reasons. These range from temperature fluctuations in transit to actual physical damage. Reduce your risk - make sure you’re buying seeds in the USA.
At Homegrown, we’re proud to partner with American institutions like the Veterans Cannabis Coalition, industry titans like Steve D’Angelo and celebrated marijuana grow experts like Kyle Kushman and Nikki & Swami Chaitanya. We’re California based and deliveries usually take less than 5 days from order to door (allowing for exceptional circumstances, as with the current Covid pandemic). Nobody beats Homegrown for the quality of seeds and the number of offers on the site. We deliver and believe we are the best place to buy marijuana seeds online in the USA.
Many online sellers offering cannabis seeds don’t really understand what they’re selling, they’re simply “moving products.” At Homegrown, we’ve run our breeding programs for two decades - we are our cannabis seeds. We are an authentic, genuine, time-served marijuana seeds company and we eat, drink and sleep marijuana. Our goal is to deliver a successful cannabis grow for everyone… and anyone.
Whether you’re a beginner looking for tips, guides, information, community and the best starter products or a seasoned grower looking for the best US seed banks, or simply for the best place to buy cannabis seeds, you’re in the right place. Start right here and make sure you get the best cannabis seeds available. You deserve only the best.
Best quality marijuana seeds
Our breeding partners possess state-of-the-art facilities in North America, South America and Europe. With one of the oldest collections of original mothers in the world and proven, stable hybrids, Homegrown offers the best quality seeds and the largest collection of stable marijuana strains in seed form anywhere in the world. Our library is so extensive, we also produce seeds for many of the most reputable companies on the internet - we won’t name names before you ask!
Make sure when you buy your marijuana seeds online that the brand, the marijuana seed bank or the breeder who produced them can provide details on where the seeds came from (the lineage) and how they were crossed and/or backcrossed. If you cannot gain access to a seed’s history it could be literally anything and the result of poor breeding practices. That won’t give you the best chance of producing a quality, Homegrown crop.
It’s not unusual for an unprofessional or inexperienced breeder to simply cross a male and a female and sell the resulting seeds as a new hybrid strain. In contrast, professional breeders, breeding programs and the best seed banks will put their strains through several generations of backcrossing to stabilize the genetics, ensuring consistent plants that reflect those genetics.
At Homegrown, we do just this. We guarantee you ALWAYS receive marijuana strains you’ll be delighted with. We’ve partnered with the best so you can be sure of one thing - our credibility!
How do marijuana laws affect buying pot seeds?
The law is obviously an important thing to consider before looking for pot seeds or searching for the best place to buy marijuana seeds. You should certainly check the laws in your area regarding which types of cannabis or marijuana products you're allowed to purchase, as well as any laws about growing weed from seed at home.
The legal status of cannabis products and home-growing marijuana will dictate where and how you buy weed seeds online. If you live in a state where it is legal to grow weed at home and there are not that many restrictions on home growing, you'll likely be able to buy cannabis directly from your favorite licensed dispensary. In some cases, you may even have the option of buying from a brick-and-mortar retailer or an online retailer. As mentioned earlier, there are weed seed banks that exist outside of the US, and will sell seeds for “souvenir purposes” only. Do note, however, it is technically illegal to bring seeds into the US and Customs will very likely seize any pot seeds that they find in the mail or on an individual opening that mail.
For most Americans, ordering from overseas is not a sensible way of buying marijuana seeds online. Companies that use these tactics to sell seeds online will not be able to legally provide information on the product itself, the genesis of the product, or help you in the event things don’t work out perfectly. These are all things that we consider to be vitally important to our Homegrown customers. While we offer seeds for sale and allow you to order seeds online, our core philosophy at Homegrown Cannabis Co is that we sell expectation. We aim to deliver.
Growing marijuana plants? Make Sure You Plan Ahead.
Whichever way you choose to go about buying your weed seeds, you need to plan ahead before growing marijuana. Here are some of the most important things you’ll need to consider, to ensure your marijuana seed purchase will meet your needs, objectives and, most importantly, your expectations.
How many seeds should I buy? Are they all going to survive?
Irrespective of the cannabis strain you buy, or whether you buy that strain as regular seeds, feminized cannabis seeds, or autoflowering seeds, you should consider how many marijuana plants you'll want to grow. It's a great idea, and a good moment, to recheck your local area laws and identify the number of plants you're legally allowed to grow.
Nature is nature. No matter the stability of the genetics or the quality of a strain, you should always plan on a certain percentage of your feminized seeds failing to germinate, or, and this is far less likely, producing less than perfect plants. Genetic diversity is the foundation of evolution, but you’re far more likely to have a happy surprise than an unpleasant one.
Marijuana seeds have a natural viability rate between 90% and 100%. This is natural selection. You are very, very likely to enjoy a 100% germination rate with your Homegrown weed seeds, but it’s not uncommon to experience a 10% fail rate, or to have a seedling fail. It’s disappointing, sure, but it’s part of life.
Understanding this, you should plan on purchasing more seeds than you think you’ll need from your chosen marijuana seed co. For example, if you want to grow 4 plants, we’d recommend purchasing an 8 pack, if you want to grow 8 plants, we’d recommend a 12 pack. As a general guideline, assume that at least 10% of the seeds you plant will, for one reason or another, not make it to harvest. We’d recommend purchasing up to 2 times the number of seeds. Correctly stored seeds will last for many years, they won’t go to waste.
If you wish to purchase regular seeds (seeds that will produce, on average, equal numbers of male and female cannabis plants) you need to plan for the males. While the average numbers are 50/50, you could end up with a 100% male or 100% female crop.
A good guide for regular seeds is to purchase up to 4 times the number of female plants you wish to grow. If you want six cannabis plants to harvest for buds and are growing from regular seeds, consider buying up to 24 regular seeds. Some might not germinate, some will turn out to be male cannabis plants and you’ll want to choose the six best phenotypes from what remains.
The short version here is that, for best results and to ensure minimal frustrations, buy and plant more seeds than the number of mature plants you want to produce. We know that this can put more financial pressure on the beginner grower, but the good news is you can find more than 20 strains in the cheap weed seeds section with our amazing BOGOs.
Where do you want to grow? Indoor or Outdoor?
You’ll need to decide if you will be cultivating your cannabis garden inside or outside. Growing cannabis indoors gives you considerable flexibility, as you’ll be able to control and fine-tune the local environment for your specific plants or strains. This gives you more freedom in terms of which kind of seeds you decide to buy. On the other hand, if you plan on growing outdoors, you’ll likely be well-served spending a little more time looking at the specific traits of the seeds you want to purchase, to ensure they will perform positively in your environment and climate.
Growing marijuana outdoors
The first quarter - or certainly the months of January and February - of the year is the perfect time to start planning your outdoor marijuana garden, to get a head start on the outdoor growing season. To take advantage of the perfect growing conditions, you’ll likely be running an outdoor grow from a given point sometime between March and November although exactly when will be dictated by your geographical location.
You can find a selection of our best outdoor strains right here, and you should definitely check out the recommended strains from our master outdoor growers, Swami and Nikki from Swami Select. Cannabis seeds California style!
Growing marijuana indoors
For indoor grows, the outdoor or ambient conditions obviously play a far lesser part in the decision - the time of year is rarely a big factor for the smaller home grower. Your time is best invested in planning where to locate your indoor marijuana grow and choosing the most appropriate cannabis growing equipment you can find, based on the specifics of your grow area and your budget. Using the best equipment to grow your own marijuana can have dramatic results on the cost of production and can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful harvest.

Indica, sativa, or hybrid
There is a seemingly endless - yet still growing - variety of marijuana strains available today. The beauty of breeding is that it’s always possible to create something new, even if the differences are subtle or nuanced. Before buying marijuana seeds, you’ll want to be clear on what kind of pot you want to end up with, and this is often determined by the kind of broad, overall effect you want or need.
Indica seeds or indica strains are more likely to deliver physical, bodily effects. They’re often linked to relaxation, sedation or managing pain. Most marijuana products marketed as sleep-aids are indica-dominant. Sativa seeds or sativa strains are usually linked with a more cerebral or mental high that can increase energy, provide a buzzy high and / or are generally mentally stimulating. Hybrid strains, as the name suggests are a mix of both Indica and Sativa traits and will produce a variety of effects, depending on the specific parent strains used to create the hybrid.
Which strain do you want to grow?
Having made a broad choice on the type of cannabis you want to cultivate, you should consider some strain specifics beyond the three general categories of indica, sativa or hybrid. If you are not totally sure which strain you want to grow, or you're curious to learn about other strains you might not be familiar with, browse through the online catalogs of reputable seed banks and read about the various strains currently available.
A good place to begin narrowing down your ideal strain selection would be to consider some or all of the following.
What is the potency of the strain? If you’re looking to buy seeds to grow a potent plant, you should ask if the strain tends to produce plants with high THC levels or high CBD levels. Usually there is a trade-off between the two.
Are you looking for very productive, mature marijjuana plants? High yield strains can be a great choice but remember: the amount of room required to house them is more than normal. That can be especially important for an indoor grow.
Are you a beginner? If so, you may want to consider autoflowering strains. You don’t need to be an expert to grow autoflowers and we have a huge range - you can browse autoflower seeds here. On the other hand, more experienced cultivators may prefer to stick with time-served photoperiod cannabis strains.
Do you want seeds better suited for medical marijuana or recreational marijuana? We have an excellent selection of high cbd seeds available, ideal for medicinal cannabis.
You can also consider other factors such as flavor and aroma, specific desirable effects and budget.
When you've decided which strain you want to grow, be sure to do a bit of research to familiarize yourself with the unique growing needs and specifications of that strain. While there are general guidelines for growing any type of cannabis, different strains also have their own specific needs. Similarly, some strains do better in specific parts of the world or climates. You should grow a strain that is well-suited to the growing environment you’ll be creating for your plants.
How much do weed seeds cost?
At Homegrown, we researched, spoke with and listened to customer feedback and we offer our seeds in packs of 4, 8 and 12 (24 seed packs are also available). This more accurately represents the most typical homegrown garden sizes in legal marijuana states. For customers requiring larger orders, we also operate a designated wholesale department.
We offer retail seeds from as little $7.00 per seed, and we offer free delivery on larger packs. Smaller pack sizes cost a little more per seed. Typically the standard 12 packs cost around $10 per seed while some of more high-end genetics can run to around $12 per seed.
Feminized and autoflower seeds will generally cost more, but this reflects the extensive research and development required to create them.
